PURPOSE

We do not consider ourselves the solution to the problem of impaired driving, only one contribution toward that goal. We strive to reduce injuries caused by drowsy or intoxicated motor vehicle operators, whether on land, water, or in the air.

We are not opposed to drinking in itself, nor do we support increasing alcohol excise taxes as part of an effort to reduce drunk driving.

OBJECTIVES

Our primary goal is to reduce drowsy and drunk driving to the extent we can via popularization of our Alert Sober reminders. In addition we support other means, including rumble strips on major highways to alert drowsy drivers when wandering off-lane and ignition interlock systems to prevent repeat offenders from starting their cars if drunk.

BACKGROUND

Alert Sober (AlertSober.org) was launched in November of 2006 by Warren Farr— artist, philosopher, and humorist. His impetus was a DUI charge incurred the previous year. It was his first offense— or rather the first during which he was caught. In several previous instances he had suspected he might be over the limit, decided to chance it anyway, and was lucky.

The time he was stopped though he was oblivious to his impairment, at least partially due to same. He thinks in that instance a last-minute reminder might have made a difference.
